The Best Man

A few weeks ago, some good friends of ours finally tied the knot.

Stephen and Anna.

Erik was asked to be Stephen's best man.

I thought it would be fun to document the occasion because it's not every day that you get to be a best man. It was a first for Erik.

Here's the best man checking out some pictures of the happy couple before the ceremony started....(isn't that little guy the cutest thing ever?!)

Pictures of Stephen and Anna hung in the trees....I loved this!
The tables all set for dinner after the ceremony.
Here we see the best man helping Stephen's friend Scott with his boutineer. Isn't that sweet? Oh the many tasks the best man must do.
The best man had Stephen's back the whole time....just in case he passed out or something dramatic like that. For everyone's sake, it all went as planned. It was a beautiful ceremony!
I had to put a picture of the beautiful bride in here too!
After fulfilling his best man duties, Erik headed off to the bar. For some Sprite my friends!
Then he got his groove on! The dancing was lots of fun- I've seriously never been to a reception where the father of the bride did cartwheels and whose dancing put us all to shame!

And then it was all over. A beautiful ending to a beautiful day!
Stephen with his best man- who also happens to be my best man too! :)

Thankful Thoughts- day 15

Today, I am SO thankful he is home.

5 days of phone calls and texts as our only means of contact was way too hard- we all missed him terribly.

After getting him home last night we talked until late into the night and then I chatted his ear off all morning. I'm sure he was ready to run out the door to work today.

It's just so good to have him with us again.

**I wanted to take a picture of him standing on the curb at the airport waiting for me to pick him up, but there were too many cars zooming in and out that I thought it not wise to drive and snap a photo at the same time. Smart right? Instead, I asked him to drive us home and shot this one instead. I bet he's so glad to be home too. I think he's still seeing spots from the flash! Sorry hunny.

A Day of Thanks

I have used this picture in a previous post, but I have very few to choose from when it comes to pictures of my hunny. (He likes to pose when I take his picture- flashing gang signs, cheesy grins, sticking out his tongue.) I need a good one of him today. Because today, I am thankful for this man.

We have a couple of sick children and he volunteered to stay home from church to take care of them today. (Actually, we drew straws and I lost.)

The reason I am thankful for him on this day is because after church, as we walked through the door, we were greeted with an amazing aroma.

Dinner.

It was such a nice surprise, and so very delicious.

Today I am thankful for my sweet husband and all that he does for our family.

Four Oh!

Forty years ago today, a baby boy was born. He became the third child and the second son in his family. Hours after he was born he was given a vitamin K shot in his little leg, which immediately swelled. Shortly after, he was diagnosed as having severe Hemophilia A.

As he grew, he and his family learned the hard way about the painful and devastating affects of living with hemophilia. As a toddler with constant bruises and black eyes from the normal bumps and falls of a child learning how to walk, they received unwelcome comments and stares from strangers. As a youth, who was often seen using crutches for a day or two to get him through an ankle or knee bleed, he received remarks like, "you're such a faker" from his peers. Trying to hide joint bleeds from his parents, who could not afford the enormously expensive medication to treat his bleeds, he suffered through many long and painful nights with a swollen, throbbing knee or elbow- whichever joint it happened to be that day.

During those years of untreated joint bleeds, the damage became evident. The once soft, round knee was replaced by a bumpy, bony structure. His elbow became fused from the many times of keeping it bent and held close to his body. The range of motion in several of his joints decreased year after year.

Two knee surgeries and an ankle fusion later (with another on the way), he has not let hemophilia slow him down. In fact, he has not only learned to live with this bleeding disorder, but has created a life around it. Many years ago, after taking business classes while working towards an MBA, he decided he wanted to start his own hemophilia home health care company. He wanted to create a company where he could help others who lived with this same disorder and in some small way, make their lives better.

And he definitely has accomplished what he set out to do. He not only supplies medication for many hemophiliacs, but he employs several people who are personally affected by this disorder. Because he knows how important a good education is for people who have hemophilia (a non-manual labor job with good insurance is a must) he has set up a scholarship fund to help with the costs of education for those in the bleeding disorder community. He helps patients with insurance needs, nursing needs, and emotional support. He is one who is looked at in this community for his compassion and understanding towards others.

And so, on this day, I want to celebrate the life of an amazing man who I get to call my best friend, my support, my husband.

Happy birthday Erik! I am so proud of you and all that you have accomplished in your 40 years. You have taken something that could have slowed or driven you down in life and have created a career where you get to make a difference in the lives of people who you are connected to- your blood brothers.

I admire you in so many ways- your determination, your drive, your compassion, your witty sense of humor, and your sharp mind. I admire you for taking your disorder and choosing to live your life in spite of the obstacles that were put in your way. I have never once heard you complain that hemophilia was your burden to bear in this life. The pain that you live with on a daily basis would cause many to complain- but you never do. You just keep pushing on- and for that, I love you. Look what you have done your forty years! I can't wait to see what happens next! I'm honored to be by your side and to share in this journey with you.

Happy Birthday!

One Eight

The Saints weren't the only ones with something to celebrate. Yesterday, Erik and I celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary. Eighteen years! That's how old I was when I met him- that hunky returned missionary.

In honor of the 18 years that we have shared together- strolling, sprinting, sometimes stumbling on the path of life together, here are eighteen things that I love about this man who has been by my side through the good the bad and all the PMS I could throw at him.

1- He still tells me I am beautiful.
2- He cares very deeply about the things that matter most to him.
3- He laughs easily.
4- He remembers to tell me I smell good- even though he can't smell.
5- He never complains about the trials he has in life. And I could write whole novel about them.
6- He grills the tastiest dinners.
7- He sings often.
8- He can strike up a conversation with anyone- young or old.
9- He is so thoughtful- he often puts others needs before his own.
10- He is like an onion with many layers- and each layer I uncover brings a new 'something' that I love about him.
11- He isn't afraid to try something new or to go after a passion.
12- He has been sporting a 'scruffy' look lately. Yowza!
13- He is good at getting me to talk about my feelings. Which is not my favorite thing to do.
14- He is so generous.
15- He is still a little boy at heart.
16- He can finish my sentences.
17- He will take the boys to work with him (when they are off track and driving me up the wall) so I can have a day to myself.
18- He is still my best friend.

I never would have guessed that after 18 years of marriage, I would still be finding things that I didn't know and can love about the man I married. We're alike in so many ways (in fact we bought each other the exact same anniversary present) yet so very different. And that's what makes our marriage beautiful and exciting.

Happy Anniversary Mr. M!

Guns and Tampons

Erik and I have been thinking about getting Isaac a rifle for his next birthday. We have consulted my dad, who is a big gun junkie, about which rifle would be a good starter for him. My dad LOVES talking about guns, going to the store to look at guns, buying guns, cleaning guns, target shooting, and some hunting here and there. He has managed to get both Isaac and Erik very excited about buying a gun.

So it wasn't surprising to me when a gun showed up on Erik's Christmas wish list this year -along with the exact gun he wanted, circled in an ad- so thoughtful!

"I thought we were just getting a gun for Isaac. When did this turn in to you getting a gun too?" I asked him one day.

"Well, when your dad and I take Isaac out shooting, I need a gun too." he said.

"My dad has lots of guns though. Can't you just borrow one of his?" I naively asked.

"Umm", he paused, thinking how he could bring this to my level of understanding- again, so thoughtful! "guns", he said, "are like tampons. You just don't share those things."

Hmmm. Well, I guess there's a lot I don't know about guns. But he's definitely no expert when it comes to tampons. They have to be one of the most shared items among the female population. :)

Little did I know that when I married this man, that I was marrying the World Champion Wac-a-Mole King.  He has never lost a game.  No, not ever.

The sad part about this is the poor unsuspecting little person he plays against.

But the reward is worth it every time-  really?  His face says it all.

If only you all could be so lucky!
